How Much Does Etsy Take Per Sale? (Breakdown for 2024)

It’s quick and easy to set up an Etsy shop, but is it cheap? At first glance, Etsy fees seem relatively low, but they can add up, especially for sellers outside of the US. This article will break down all the Etsy fees you should be aware of before setting up your shop. It also shares examples of how much Etsy takes for a sale based on different locations.

Once you have a clear understanding of how Etsy fees work, learn how to lower them here.

*UPDATED to reflect seller fee increase from 5% to 6.5% of each sale

What percentage does Etsy take?

Etsy takes $0.20 USD, plus 6.5% of the total sale, as well as 3% of the total sale + $0.25 USD for Etsy payment fees. Summed up, that’s $0.45 USD plus 9.5% of a sale. Those fees are based on a US seller.

Etsy Payment fees vary by country and can be anywhere from 3% – 6.5% plus $0.18 – $0.64 USD. There are also additional fees Etsy sellers in some countries must pay. We’ll take a closer look at those in this article.

The percentage Etsy takes per sale also depends on the total sale amount.

Let’s look at a quick example…

How much does Etsy take from a $10 sale?

On a $10 USD sale, Etsy will take $1.40 (minimum). The percentage Etsy takes of a $10 USD sale is 14%.

  • $0.20 USD listing fee
  • 6.5% of the total ($10 USD) = $0.65
  • 3% of the total ($10 USD) + $0.25 USD = $0.55

Total: $1.40

This amount is based on a US seller and the basic fees Etsy charges. Fees for Etsy shipping labels, Etsy Ads, etc. would be additional.

In the Example section below, I’ve broken down how much Etsy takes from a $20, $30, and $50 sale for US sellers, UK sellers, Canadian sellers, and Australian sellers.

Basic Etsy Fees

There are 3 types of fees every seller must pay:

  1. Etsy Listing Fee
  2. Etsy Transaction Fee
  3. Payment Fee

1 – Etsy Listing Fee

To sell a product on Etsy, you must create a listing for it (to list its price, description, photos, etc.).

Etsy charges $0.20 USD per listing

You are charged $0.20 USD per listing regardless of whether the listing sells or not.

Product Variations

If you sell variations of a product (e.g. different colors or sizes), you’ll be charged the standard listing fee ($0.20 USD), but will be charged an additional listing fee for each additional item you sell from the listing.

How long does an Etsy listing last?

An Etsy listing will last four months. After four months, the listing expires and you will be charged an additional $0.20 USD if you choose to renew the listing, or if you have it set to auto-renew.

If you create a listing with a quantity greater than 1, your listing will automatically be renewed and your account will be charged $0.20 USD after each sale.

2 – Etsy Transaction Fee

Etsy takes a 6.5% commission of a sale’s total. That total includes the price of the product you list, as well the amount you charge customers for shipping, gift wrapping, personalization, or any other add-ons a customer includes in their order.

You will be charged 6.5% of the total sale in your designated listing currency. If you operate your business in Australia but list your items on Etsy in USD, you will be charged 6.5% of the USD price. If you operate your business in Australia and list your items in AUD, you will be charged 6.5% of the AUD price.

The 6.5% will not apply to sales tax if you operate your business in US or Canada, unless you’ve included sales tax in your listing’s price. If you sell your products from outside of US or Canada, you’re required to include mandatory sales tax in your prices, and thus, the 6.5% transaction fee will apply to sales tax (as well as shipping, gift-wrapping fees, etc.).

You are only charged a transaction fee when a sale is made. If you create a listing and it expires or you remove it before it sells, you won’t be charged a transaction fee.

3 – Payment Fee

If your bank account is in a location that Etsy offers Etsy Payments, you will be forced to use Etsy Payments to handle the transfer of money from your customers’ bank account to your bank account.

Etsy Payment fees will vary based on the location of your bank account and are a set rate plus a percentage of the total sale price. That includes the total of a sale (e.g. product price plus gift wrapping price), shipping fees, and any applicable taxes.

If you live in a country that isnt eligible for Etsy Payments, you can use PayPal to accept payments, which will also have varying fees based on your region (find fees here ).

You are only charged a payment fee when a sale is made. If you create a listing and it expires or you remove it before it sells, you won’t be charged a payment fee.

Seller Dependent Fees

There are other fees that are mandatory for some Etsy sellers, depending on their location and listing currency. Tax laws may also affect your sale’s totals, and thus, how much Etsy takes from you.

Let’s take a look at these location and currency-dependent fees, are well as taxes on Etsy.

Regulatory Operating Fees

Sellers in some countries will have to pay a Regulatory Operating fee. It’s a fixed percentage of a sale’s total (including applicable gift wrapping fee, personalization fee, shipping fee, taxes).

The percentage a seller must pay will depend on the seller’s location.

Sellers from the countries listed below must pay a Regulatory Operating fee:

  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Turkey

Visit this page for the most current country list and rates.

Currency Conversion fee

If you choose to list the items in your shop as a different currency than your payment account, your sales funds will be subject to a Currency Conversion Fee.

You can avoid this fee by simply listing your items in the same currency as your payment account (e.g. if you live in Australia, list your items on Etsy in AUD).

If you’re an Etsy Payments user and decide to list your products in a different currency than your payments account, you’ll be charged a 2.5% fee on the sale amount.

Learn more here.

Taxes

Etsy will calculate, charge, and remit taxes on a seller’s behalf when they’re shipping products to certain states. For an up-to-date list of the states Etsy will calculate, collect, and remit sales tax for, visit this page.

Etsy may also automatically charge and remit VAT (value added tax) on digital products (e.g. downloadable knitting patterns) sold to buyers in certain countries. You can find a list of those countries here.

In all other cases, the seller is responsible for charging and remitting applicable taxes for the goods and services you sell through Etsy.

Sellers located in the United States and Canada can use Etsy’s sales tax tool, found in the Shop Manager section (learn more here).

Whether or not you must charge sales tax, how you charge it, and many other laws small business owners must follow, will depend on your location, what you sell, where you sell it, and many other factors.

Does Etsy automatically take fees?

Your Etsy fees will be automatically deducted from the revenue you make on Etsy if you’re a participant of Etsy payments. Etsy will simply take the fees you owe them from the sales you made and then transfer what’s left to you.

If you’re not a participant in Etsy Payments, you will have an amount due each month, which you can pay through your Etsy account -> Shop Manager -> Finances -> Payment Account -> Amount Due -> Pay Now.

If you’ve listed items on Etsy but have not made any sales, you’ll have to pay the amount due (from listing fees, ad costs, or other) since there isn’t revenue to deduct fees from.

When does Etsy charge your card?

Etsy will charge your card on the first of the month if you’re a US-based business and are enrolled in autobilling. If you aren’t enrolled in/aren’t eligible for autobilling and have an amount due, you can pay that amount between the 1st and the 15th of the month.

When you make a sale through Etsy Payments, your fees will automatically be deducted from the amount Etsy pays you for your sales. If you have enough sales in a month to cover all your fees, you won’t have an amount due and Etsy won’t charge your card/you won’t have to make a payment to Etsy.

What happens if you don’t pay your Etsy bill?

If you don’t pay your amount due by the 16th of the month, Etsy may suspend your shop. They may also restrict account privileges, such as removing your Star Seller Badge, blocking you from creating new listings, or renewing existing listings. Etsy also reserves the right to use a third-party collection agency to help them collect a payment.

Optional Etsy Fees

We’ve just covered the basic Etsy fees, but there are several more options available on Etsy, which come at a cost.

Let’s take a look at some of the additional and optional, fees an Etsy seller may need to pay.

Advertising & promotional fees

As a seller, you may choose to use ads to help promote your listings. Etsy offers ads on their platform (Etsy Ads), as well as Offsite Ads (i.e. when Etsy pays for an ad to appear in a Google search).

When using Etsy Ads, you decide how much you want to spend on ads and set a budget. These fees are charged in USD.

If you opt into Offsite Ads, you’ll only be charged if the ad they run leads to a sale.

For example, I may type “Blue druzy earrings” into Google and see an ad for an Etsy listing. If I click on that ad but don’t buy, the seller won’t be charged a fee. But if I click the ad and do buy (that day or within 30 days of clicking), the seller will be charged an advertising fee.

The fees for Offsite Ads vary depending on your shop’s sales over the prior 365 day period.

Learn more about Ad fees here.

Delivery Fees

You may choose to purchase postage labels from Etsy, instead of your local post office.

This isn’t offered in every country and fees will vary greatly depending on what you’re shipping, who you’re shipping it with, where you’re shipping the package to and from, if you include return postage labels or insurance, etc.

The pros to buying your shipping labels through Etsy are convenience, accuracy, and it may be cheaper for some sellers (depending on the postal service options they have access to).

Keep in mind, although Etsy charges a fee for ordering shipping labels through them, that fee should then be passed onto the customer, in one way or another. Shipping costs may be built into your prices so you’re able to offer “free” shipping, or it may be a cost that’s added to the customer’s total during checkout. Either way, you should recoup this Etsy fee when you make a sale.

Etsy Plus

Etsy Plus is a $10 USD/month subscription service offered to Etsy sellers in “good standing”. Here’s what’s included with an Etsy Plus subscription:

  • 15 listing credits ($3 value)
  • $5 USD Etsy Ads credit
  • Option to create a custom web domain
  • Ability to send out “restocked” alerts to shoppers interested in your sold out items
  • Ability to further customize your shop
  • Access to discounts and perks (currently this includes discounts on custom shipping boxes and business cards)

Learn more about Etsy Plus here.

In-Person Selling Fees

This service may be useful to you if you plan to sell at several craft fairs and want to sync your Etsy shop with your Square reader.

The perk to syncing your Etsy shop with your Square reader is you don’t have to remember to update your Etsy shop if you take the items listed in your Etsy shop to a craft show and one or more of those items sell.

You will have already paid the $0.20 USD listing fee and won’t be refunded that money if you sell your listing in-person. However, you won’t be charged Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee or Etsy Payment fees if you sell an item from your Etsy shop, in-person. Instead, you will be charged Square’s Payment Processing fees.

Pattern Fees

Pattern (by Etsy) is a platform that allows you to build your own website. It’s similar to Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, etc.

The benefit of building a website using Pattern is that you can sync your Etsy shop listings with your Pattern website.

You can also manage your Etsy shop and your Pattern website through Shop Manager in your Etsy dashboard.

You can try Pattern for free for 30 days, after which, it will cost $15 USD/month.

When you build your own website (using Pattern or another platform), you will also need to purchase a domain name (e.g. www.YourBusinessName.com). This will be a separate fee.

I hope this article has been helpful in understanding how much Etsy takes per sale.

  1. This was a really good article. Thank you! It makes me doubt I will have a shop on Etsy. Their fees are simply too high on a small crafter.

    1. Made Urban says:

      Hi Carla,

Thanks for reading! I’ll have to do a side-by-side comparison looking at other ways and platforms for selling online and what the fees equate to.

Although you skip many of Etsy’s fees when you build your own website, you do still have to pay transactional fees with whichever third-party payment company you use (e.g. PayPal) to accept payments online. And then you have the additional fees of hosting, domain registration, etc.

There might be an article in the near future outlining the price differences and pros and cons 🙂

      ~Erin

  2. WOW, great article. I didn’t know about all the extra fees.

    1. Made Urban says:

Thanks for reading Larry! There are a lot of little fees that add up. Most can be avoided but the necessary ones still eat into your profits.
      Glad it was helpful!

  3. This article was the easiest to understand article I’ve read on Etsy’s fees. Thanks for taking the time to write and share.

    1. Made Urban says:

      Hi Kim,

Thanks for reading and commenting! That means so much 🙂 That’s always my goal; to simplify things that are unnecessarily complicated 😉 So I’m glad you found it easy to understand.

Great article. Finally an article listing the different fees for different countries not just the U.S. Do you have any articles on the fees other selling platforms charge? Thanks gaye

  5. Thanks for this easy to understand breakdown! Are there any hidden or extra fees for being a US seller selling to Canada?
    Thanks

  6. Etsy’s fees are ridiculous. They’re now adding 15% offsite advertising fees. This and all the other fees listed above are also exclusive of taxes, so if your local tax rate for services is 15%, the offsite advertising fees works out at 17.5%.
The BIG thing about their fees is that they’re on your gross sale price and they all compound.
If you have a product that costs you $30 to produce and $10 to ship, sell it at $60, and service tax rate of 15% the fees are:

    Listing Fee 0.20 + 0.03
    Transaction Fee 3.90 + 0.59
    Processing Fee 2.65 + 0.40
    Offsite Advertising 9.00 + 1.35
    Total Fees & Tax: 18.11

    You’re left with 1.89

Their much touted Offsite Advertising isn’t optional if you sell over $10,000 in any one year (and that’s Revenue, not profit), so it’s essentially not optional if you’re intending to make any money.
They say you will double your sales.
In the example above, without it you would have made 12.24, but because your margin is greatly reduced, you need to either sell 6.5 products (increasing your own sales, beyond what the advertising brings in); or increase your sales price to $66, just to make the same profit on the two items that you were already making on one.

    It’s just not worth it.

  7. Sherbert Glass says:

Okay I’ll make it simple. Etsy “Nickle and dimes” you too much. Every sale I make on Etsy, they take a total of 25% and I still pay for the shipping on top of that. It’s ridiculous that I sell something for $180 and after Etsy takes their share, I end up with $135 and then I have to pay $35 for shipping fees. It costs me a little less than half the price I’m asking. I did the math and I get paid $4 per hour. I’m sure that the majority of Etsy sellers are in the same spot. Is Shopify better?

  8. Hey,
Thankyou so much, as a young girl trying to start a business this article has helped more than anything else I have read so far and is the easiest to understand and gives me hope that I may yet get a shop on Etsy.
    Again thankyou.

  9. Thanks so much for this article and the clarity. Im in Australia, the GST is also taken out for each sale which is an additional 10% I think thats like VAT. So often paying 22% in fees. I dont earn enough for them to take it out but they do anyway.

  10. Hey,
Just to let you all know you have to be 18 and have a credit card to have a shop on Etsy.

  11. Osiris Scott says:

Does the listing fee apply every time you sell an item from that list or is it a one time fee per listing?
