How to further research an idea

It’s important to ensure a product is the right fit for a handmade business and that you know the consumer intent behind a search.

Take the following steps before landing on an idea:

1 – Google the term

Choose a term from the list and enter it into Google.

2 – Look at the top results in Google

The top results will be a good indication of what’s popular with consumers.

For example, when I Google “Mother’s Day necklace”, the top results incorporate children’s names, birthstones, or a charm. These top results indicate most consumers are looking for a personalized necklace that incorporates the children (over a necklace that spells “mom” or a locket necklace).

Seeing Etsy as a result on the first page of Google is a good indication that people are interested in the handmade version of that product.

If you only see results for Amazon, Walmart, and other budget-friendly e-commerce stores, the idea may not be a good fit for a handmade business.

3 – Search the term on Etsy

Open Etsy and type the term into Etsy’s search bar (e.g. Mother’s Day necklace). Look at the results on the first few pages to get an idea of what types of products are more popular with handmade shoppers.

Which colors, styles, prices, etc. appear the most on the first page? This is typically a good indication of what’s most popular.

You can also analyze individual products and shops to get a better idea of approximate sales/reviews.

I hope this article sparks some ideas for your handmade business!
