You must have the skills to make the products you’re selling. However, it’s important to choose an item based on what consumers are looking for, rather than what you feel like selling.

It’s probably the most common mistake Etsy shops with no sales are making.

The shop owner is creating whatever they feel like and then hoping someone will buy.

That’s putting the cart before the horse.

You must know what will sell and who will buy it, and then make products that are a fit for the market and its demand.

Easy Etsy shop ideas

Items that are easy to sell on Etsy are ones that consumers are searching for online but don’t have endless options to choose from. There shouldn’t be too many Etsy shops selling a product that’s similar to the one you want to sell.

Many people may shop for jewelry on Etsy, but there are over 12 million jewelry listings. Making it to the top of that list so shoppers actually see your jewelry is not easy.

So instead of making and listing a “gold necklace” (too generic), or making up a necklace design and naming it based on your words, e.g. “gold and black necklace with wire-wrapped ruby”, you could sell an “evil eye necklace”.

There are more people searching for an “evil eye necklace” each month than “gold necklace” (and there’s no one typing “gold and black necklace with wire-wrapped ruby” into a search bar).

On Etsy, there are over 1.5 million listings for “gold necklace”. There are only 56,000 Etsy listings for “evil eye necklace”.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT THIS LIST

The Etsy shop ideas I’m sharing are ideas for niche shops.

For example, I don’t suggest you sell “hats” on Etsy, but rather, create an Etsy shop that sells just birthday hats.

In some cases, it would be appropriate to combine two shop ideas (e.g. an Etsy shop that sells birthday hats and birthday sashes), but most shop ideas have products with high enough search volumes to generate healthy sales.

For example, let’s say I start a party decoration shop and sell a variety of party decorations. Tens of thousands of people are searching for specific party decorations for each month.

If I implement the proper SEO (search engine optimization) tactics, a good portion of those people will find my products and my shop when they search, for example, “bachelorette party decorations” on Google or Etsy.

Now let’s say instead, I’ve decided to open an Etsy shop to sell cotton tea towels.

There are fewer than 100 people searching online for “cotton tea towel” each month. Even if I worked hard on SEO and made it to the first page of results, only a portion of those 100 people will click to view my product.

I need at least 100 people to visit my listing/shop each month to make just one sale (based on the average 1 – 2% conversion rate of an e-commerce store).

My cotton tea towel business won’t survive based on the search volume of “cotton tea towel”.

I could still build a successful cotton tea towel business. But that would require:

A strong brand
A strong USP (unique selling point)
A strong marketing campaign
growing a big social media following
posting frequently to social media
starting a blog
sending press releases
selling at craft shows
etc.

That’s just a fraction of the work involved when sales rely almost solely on marketing.

And it’s harder to sell a product people aren’t in the market for.
